I share my favourite three gluten free craving crushing snacks to help you get through the dreaded 3 PM energy slump including a fibre-rich orange creamsicle smoothie, power ice cream, and protein guacamole!
June is officially a bit of a crazy pants month. I JUST handed in my manuscript draft for my cookbook #MindfulGlow, I’m weeks away from moving (again!), and I’ve got a ton of exciting trips and appearances this Spring and Summer. When things get busy, healthy eating often falls by the wayside, and I sometimes have to remind myself to actually eat. I know I’m not alone. As my mindful rule of thumb, I try really hard to keep my hunger tank between ¼ and ¾ of the way full. That’s the ideal. The reality is that sometimes I get distracted trying to get a food shot while on a conference call, while responding to an email and I forget to sit down to a proper meal. Next thing I know and I’m literally ripping through the back of my pantry in a desperate hangry rage, stuffing ALL THE THINGS into my mouth STAT. It’s not pretty.
So this is why in my sane (well-fed) moments, I try to plan some healthy snacks that I can easily keep on hand for when I accidently let my hunger monster get out of its cage. The key is to choose ingredients that have one or more “craving crushing compounds” like fibre, protein and fat. Unlike refined carbs, fibre, protein and fat are digested slowly, which makes them perfect craving crushing snacks.
Gluten Free Craving Crushing Snacks
I wanted to share with you three of my go-to craving crushing snacks that are perfect for keeping you satiated until you can get to that next meal.

Creamsicle Fibre Smoothie
Most Canadians don’t get enough of the 25-38 grams of fibre they need each day so I love mixing a little Meta Appetite Control powder, from Metamucil, into my snacks and drinks. Just two teaspoons packs6 grams of fibre that helps keep me satiated longer, while improving digestive health, and irregularity. Plus, it gives my smoothie a yummy thick consistency that’s super satisfying along with my frozen bananas, fresh oranges and high-protein Greek yogurt.
Almond Butter & Strawberry Power “Ice Cream”
You’re not going to believe how easy this recipe is. I legit just blend super high-protein cottage cheese with fibre-rich frozen strawberries, add a swirl of almond butter and a sprinkle of crushed almonds to yield the creamiest, dreamiest soft serve “ice cream” you’ve ever had. You can add a little honey or maple syrup, but I usually enjoy it au natural!
Now, let’s get real- there’s nothing wrong with a bottomless bowl of traditional guac, but if you want a little more staying power, make this protein guacamole. This recipe starts with Skyr yogurt, which is an Icelandic yogurt I’m currently obsessed with because it has more protein than Greek (25 grams in each cup!) and it’s thicker and less astringent. So I basically just stretch my guacamole recipe (which is already loaded with lots of satisfying monounsaturated fats) with Skyr yogurt to boost the protein and serve it with more fibre-rich veg!
Hangry crisis averted! You’ve now got three amazing gluten free craving crushing snacks that you can keep on hand for those hangry emergencies when the tank gets dangerously low!
