For days you’re looking for something other than a traditional sandwich, these Ham, Peach and Avocado Pinwheel Sandwiches for Back to School Lunch Boxes will become your family’s favourite!
Today my husband asked me what I was working on recipe testing and shooting and I told him back to school lunch packing. His gut response? “Ugh I hate packing lunches.” Doesn’t this just sum it up right there? My husband probably hasn’t packed a lunch in over a decade and yet he still remembers how annoying it was to have to do on the regular.
Well our little baby E is still a long ways off from needing a lunch to be packed, but that doesn’t mean I can’t start putting together a solid list of delicious and nutritious kid friendly lunch box options that both babe and us parents will enjoy. These ham, peach and avocado pinwheels are perfect school-safe lunches that are packed with nutrition. In fact, we’re covering all of the major food groups in a single bite! They’re also a unique lunch box change when you or your kids are craving anything but a sandwich.
How to Make Ham, Peach and Avocado Pinwheel Sandwiches for Lunch Boxes
I always say that simple recipes mean you need to use the absolute best quality ingredients. I’m a huge fan of DuBreton’s full range of Organic Sliced Ham because it’s free of nitrates, added preservatives and is made with pork raised without antibiotics and is certified humane. I’m not a vegan, but I do believe in trying to buy high quality meats that are raised with the highest level of care and DuBreton really delivers on this philosophy. Their mantra is to Allow Pigs to be Pigs. This means they’re completely crate-free, are not physically altered (so not teeth or tail clipping), have a stimulating environment with less stressful living conditions, and are fed a diet made of high quality non-GMO grains with no animal by-products. And if an animal is sick and requires antibiotics, that animal is immediately removed from their pork supply.
Their sliced ham is super flavourful on its own, but pairs amazingly well with fresh sweet peaches, creamy avocado, herbaceous basil and swiss cheese, all wrapped up in a high fibre whole grain tortilla. It’s a gourmet enough combination that adults will love them, but it’s agreeable and familiar enough that they’re totally kid friendly lunch box options. You simply roll them up, slice them up and serve them in your little lunch box as easy finger foods. Want to adult-ify these Ham, Peach and Avocado Pinwheel Sandwiches? Just make them into a full-sized wrap and add some shredded lettuce or spinach to bulk it up!
