Second Period Munchies

I love the combination of sweet, salt, and heat, and this munchies mix really delivers the goods. Again, these are easy superbowl snacks to make the day ahead, but wait until at least a few hours before serving to add in the dried fruit to ensure everything stays crunchy and crisp.

Ingredients

  • 1 egg white
  • 3 tbsp granulated sugar 45 mL
  • 1 tbsp chili powder 15 mL
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin 2 mL
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper or to taste, 1 mL
  • 1 tsp salt preferably Kosher, 5 mL
  • 3 cups peanuts 750 mL
  • 1 cup pretzels 250 mL
  • 1/2 cup banana chips coarsely broken, 125 mL
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries 125 mL

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 300°F (140°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Whisk egg white until frothy. Whisk in sugar, chili powder, cumin, cayenne and salt (if using salted peanuts, use only 3/4 tsp (4 mL) salt). Add peanuts and stir to coat. Spread on baking sheet in a single layer.
  • Bake in preheated oven, stirring a couple of times then spreading back into a single layer, until peanuts are barely sticky, about 30 minutes. If they are still a little sticky, they will dry on cooling. Stir in pretzels, banana chips and cranberries. Let dry completely.
