Key Ingredients

Apples – I think a bright green Granny Smith apple looks the most “alien”, but use whatever apple you have on hand.
Almond butter – My kids go nuts for apples and almond butters, however any nut butter of choice will do. Think cashew butter, peanut butter or even sunflower seed butter if you have allergies.
Marshmallows – These make our fun little alien eyes! Plus, what kid doesn’t love a mini marshmallow?!
Sunflower seeds – Not only do sunflower seeds look exactly like little alien teeth, but they’re a source of healthy fats and vitamin E. Small but definitely nutrition-packed.
How To Make This Recipe

Step One: Place two apple slices together so they’re touching on one side, and smear the inside sides on both wedges with almond butter.
Step Two: Add a strawberry slice in the middle of the bottom wedge and stick sunflower seeds on the top and bottom of the apple wedges. Using the almond butter as glue, place the top wedge on top of the bottom.
Step Three: Meanwhile, place the chocolate in a small bowl and microwave on 50% heat in 30 second increments until melted. Transfer to a piping bag.
Step Four: Pipe a small dot in the middle of each of the marshmallows (like eyes), then attach the marshmallow on one side of the toothpick to the marshmallow and the other side into the apple. Refrigerate until ready to serve!
Expert Tips
The sunflower seeds look the best as teeth, but if you’re annoyed trying to put them in (they are so teeny tiny small) then you can totally use pumpkin seeds, pine nuts, almond slices or peanuts instead. Alternatively, tweezers can help with placement if you’re dead-set on the sunflower seeds.
Recipe FAQs
Marshmallows usually contain gelatin which is derived from pork. If you use a vegan marshmallow and dairy-free chocolate, you’re all set!
Swap the almond butter for sunflower seed butter or a soy-based nut-free spread. I also recommend adding a note or nut-free sticker (these sometimes come with the nut-free spreads) to let the teacher know they are allergen-friendly.
