Close up of almond butter alien apples as healthy halloween snacks for kids.

Guys, I have been having WAY too much fun over here coming up with healthy Halloween snacks for kids. My hubby walked in while we were creating these and was like, “Do you guys even work?” HA! I know, my job is sometimes legitimately that much fun. But what’s even more fun is getting to make and serve these adorable treats for a Halloween party, and this one is one of my personal faves.

I wasn’t sure what to name them but I asked a friend of mine’s 8 year old and she said “alien smiles”. Halloween Apple and Almond Butter Alien Smiles it is!!

If you’re looking for EASY and healthy Halloween snacks for kids, this is the one!

Key Ingredients

Apples – I think a bright green Granny Smith apple looks the most “alien”, but use whatever apple you have on hand.

Almond butter – My kids go nuts for apples and almond butters, however any nut butter of choice will do. Think cashew butter, peanut butter or even sunflower seed butter if you have allergies.

Marshmallows – These make our fun little alien eyes! Plus, what kid doesn’t love a mini marshmallow?!

Sunflower seeds – Not only do sunflower seeds look exactly like little alien teeth, but they’re a source of healthy fats and vitamin E. Small but definitely nutrition-packed.

How To Make This Recipe

Hand holding up a halloween apple alien smiles.

Step One: Place two apple slices together so they’re touching on one side, and smear the inside sides on both wedges with almond butter.

Step Two: Add a strawberry slice in the middle of the bottom wedge and stick sunflower seeds on the top and bottom of the apple wedges. Using the almond butter as glue, place the top wedge on top of the bottom.

Step Three: Meanwhile, place the chocolate in a small bowl and microwave on 50% heat in 30 second increments until melted. Transfer to a piping bag.

Step Four: Pipe a small dot in the middle of each of the marshmallows (like eyes), then attach the marshmallow on one side of the toothpick to the marshmallow and the other side into the apple. Refrigerate until ready to serve!

Expert Tips

The sunflower seeds look the best as teeth, but if you’re annoyed trying to put them in (they are so teeny tiny small) then you can totally use pumpkin seeds, pine nuts, almond slices or peanuts instead. Alternatively, tweezers can help with placement if you’re dead-set on the sunflower seeds.

Recipe FAQs

Is this recipe vegan?

Marshmallows usually contain gelatin which is derived from pork. If you use a vegan marshmallow and dairy-free chocolate, you’re all set!

My kid’s school is allergen-free. How can I make this recipe nut-free?

Swap the almond butter for sunflower seed butter or a soy-based nut-free spread. I also recommend adding a note or nut-free sticker (these sometimes come with the nut-free spreads) to let the teacher know they are allergen-friendly.

This Halloween snack board looks amazing! I especially like how kid-friendly and party-ready it is.

I recently put together a similar Halloween recipe collection with easy spooky snacks and appetizer ideas that work great for school parties and family movie nights.

Love seeing creative ideas like this before the holiday season!
